COVID Variant Tied to Heart Inflammation in Cats, Dogs

FRIDAY, Nov. 5, 2021 (HealthDay News) — At a veterinary clinic in the United Kingdom, the staff noticed a sudden and atypical increase in cats and dogs who were experiencing myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle.

Was it a coincidence that these animals were showing up severely ill from a condition that has been linked to COVID-19 just as the highly contagious Alpha variant was circulating?

Apparently not.

Canned Dog Food Recall, High Vitamin D Levels Linked To Serious Health Issues

(ABC4) – If you’re a dog owner, check your pantry to make sure to immediately discard these canned dog food products in your home.

The FDA announced a voluntary recall involving Fromm Family Foods’ canned dog entrées. Officials have discovered elevated levels of vitamin D present in the food. The specific line affected is the Fromm Four-Star Shredded Entrée canned food.

Approximately 5,500 cases of the product are being voluntarily recalled by Fromm Family Foods. Although no reports of illness or injury have been reported, potential adverse reactions could occur in dogs of all sizes.

If dogs ingest excess levels of vitamin D, symptoms can include vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss.

“Vitamin D when consumed at very high levels can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction,” officials say. “Consumers who have dogs that have consumed any of the affected products and are exhibiting these symptoms should contact their veterinarian.”

The discovery was made by the company through their own analysis.

“We have identified and isolated the error and in addition to our existing safety process, we have put corrective actions into place to prevent this from happening again,” company officials say.

Those who have purchased Fromm Four-Star Shredded Entrée canned dog food should return the product to the original retailer immediately.

Anyone with further questions can contact the company at 1-800-325-6331 or email info@frommfamily.com.

ELIAS Animal Health Launches Clinical Trial Of Cancer Immunotherapy Treatment For Canine Oral Melanoma

elias logo

OLATHE, Kan., Aug. 31, 2021 — ELIAS Animal Health, a clinical stage development company advancing novel treatments for cancer in companion animals, today announced the initiation of a pilot study of its adoptive T cell therapy combined with surgery and radiotherapy, if indicated, for dogs diagnosed with oral malignant melanoma, a highly metastatic disease and the most common form of oral cancer seen in dogs. Melanoma is widely believed to be chemo-resistant and in this study the adoptive T cell therapy will be administered instead of chemotherapy.

This clinical trial will enroll dogs that have been newly diagnosed with oral melanoma but have not yet been treated for their cancer. It is a multi-center, single-arm study with no randomization. ELIAS is providing financial assistance that will substantially cover costs of participation and treatment in the trial. A list of participating sites can be found on the website.

Adoptive T cell therapy is a form of immunotherapy that involves treating the patient with its own cancer-specific “killer” T cells. The objective of this clinical trial is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this immunotherapy compared to historical control data obtained using surgery alone or surgery plus radiotherapy. In addition, patients will be evaluated for quality of life throughout the study.

“We are thrilled to announce the launch of the next clinical study which will evaluate the adoptive T cell therapy in a second form of cancer,” said Tammie Wahaus, chief executive officer, ELIAS Animal Health. “Building on the promising results reported last year for our initial osteosarcoma study and completion of enrollment in our pivotal osteosarcoma study, we look forward to expanding our portfolio to treat more dogs affected by cancer.”

Veterinarians interested in more information on the clinical trial, please visit www.eliasanimalhealth.com or contact ELIAS at clinicaltrials@eliasah.com. Interested investors may contact info@eliasah.com.

Pet Parents Can Now Quickly Identify and Relieve Their Dogs’ Pain

First Pain Locator Map and Website That Helps Dog Owners Quickly and Easily Identify What's Hurting Fido

LOS ANGELES – The Center for Dog Pain Relief announced today the launch of the first website, DogPainRelief.com, and first pain locator map solely devoted to helping pet parents relieve their dogs’ physical and emotional pain.

Both the website and dog pain locator map were first envisioned by Alan Siskind, a founder of the Center for Dog Pain Relief, as an ever-lasting tribute to his 16 year old Wheaten Terrier, Maddy, (pictured above).

According to Siskind, “I started the company out of my love for Maddy and all dogs who unnecessarily suffer from pain. Maddy had to endure needless days and months of suffering from osteoarthritis and cruciate ligament ruptures, as well as a herniated disc and other ailments because I wasn’t able to easily find the expert help, support and advice that both Maddy and I needed to treat her pain.”

A first for the pet community, the patented interactive Pain Locator Map App is scheduled to be introduced in September 2021. The Pain Map App will enable dog owners to easily find the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for the majority of physical and emotional pain. The website version of the Pain Locator Map can be found throughout DogPainRelief.com. An iOS and Android compatible version is currently being beta tested.

Both the website and dog pain locator map were created by the Center for Dog Pain Relief’s design and development team over the past 18 months, and are the first of many software applications currently being created to help dog owners find the right products, treatments and pain relief specialists to help relieve their dogs’ chronic and acute physical and emotional pain.
